In Cañamás Hnos we always apply the Best Available Techniques (BAT’s), therefore reducing the effects that our production and storage systems have on the environment. In order to do this, we carry out 3 main lines of action:

Cogeneration system

Cogeneration system

At our packing centre in l’Alcúdia we have an electric cogeneration system. Thanks to the installation of a generator operated by natural gas we are able to improve the energetic efficiency as we obtain electrical energy and we take advantage of the thermal energy generated for:

  • Mantaining the temperature: a hot water boiler feeds the machine used to chill the conservation chambers.
  • Obtaining hot water: we also obtain hot water from the generator, which is used for heating and defrosting the chambers and for the fruits’ maturing processes.

This cogeneration system has 3 main advantages that improve our environmental conservation policy:

  1. Energy saving: we obtain a greater electrical efficiency that allows us to reduce the consumption of energy used to chill.
  2. Pollution reduction: making better use of each kw of natural gas consumed.
  3. Cost reduction: decrease in production scrap by not breaking the cold chain.

The installation of a centrifugal compressor (chiller) in our warehouse in l’Alcúdia combined with the cogeneration plant allows us to maintain energy autonomy and chill at times when production in the warehouse drops and, therefore, reduces the energy obtained by the generator.

By using the chiller, we keep the chambers at an optimum temperature for our citrus throughout the day. This allows us to maintain quality and reduce production scrap while controlling the environmental impact of our production.

As part of our environmental conservation policy, we have installed in our warehouses water purification systems to eliminate pesticides and biodegradable particles before discharging to the outside.

Thanks to a biological reactor that oxygenates the water we are able to eliminate a great part of the pesticides and other agents that we use for the conservation of the fruit. This water undergoes advanced oxidation processes in which ozone is injected to obtain 100% purified water. It is in this moment that the water is poured to the outside, avoiding this way the contamination of the rivers.
